Science is a pretty amazing discipline. What other subject seeks to explain the origins of the universe by smashing teeny, tiny particles together at high speed, and hoping that the experiment doesn’t end the world in the process?
For those of us with humanities degrees, and increasingly distant memories of burning jumper sleeves on Bunsen burners in school chemistry labs, it’s a rather alien and vaguely intimidating field.
So it’s nice that scientists are doing their bit to bring science, in all its experimental glory, a bit closer to home; to make it something that we lesser mortals can appreciate.
And this week, the experimental focus has clearly been breakfast.
In the last couple of days, from the lovingly executed research of other people, we’ve learnt that medium eggs taste (watch out, here comes the science bit) “more eggy” than their larger counterparts, and tea tastes better from a favourite mug.
So there you have it: origins of the universe it might not be, but a good start to the day it definitely is.
